Service Description

Sep. 7 - Dec. 14, 2022 Wednesday, 6pm-7pm Pacific Time This is a 15-Week Zoom course on Rissho Kosei-kai’s Kyoten Readings (Chant book). Kyoten is a compilation of excerpts taken from the Threefold Lotus Sutra.  Rissho Kosei-kai members chant this Kyoten morning and evening as one of their fundamental Buddhist practice. This course will explain in detail, the key points in each section of the Kyoten Reading, as interpreted through the writings of Nikkyo Niwano, founder of Rissho Kosei-kai. Whether we recite the Kyoten or the Threefold Lotus Sutra, what are the reasons for sutra recitations at Rissho Kose-kai?   1.  We are able to present the gift of spiritual joy to our ancestors through transferring the merits we acquire from sutra chanting.

 2.  The starting point of our faith is our aspiration to the attainment of buddhahood.  We therefore chant the sutra wholeheartedly to pray for help to render bodhisattva practice for the sake of people throughout the world.

 3.  We are able to purify our minds to their utmost depth by chanting the sutra.  Sutra chanting in Rissho Kosei-Kai also functions as samadhi practice.  The continued samadhi practice of chanting the sutra gradually purifies our subconsciousness. During each class, we will review the reading material and have discussion.   Class participation and interactive discussion is key and will guide you to a deeper understanding of the Threefold Lotus Sutra. Objective upon completion of this course: 1. Develop an understanding of the Kyoten Readings and practice at Rissho Kosei-kai. 2. Apply the teaching to your everyday life. 3. Become able to share a moderate understanding of the basic Buddhist teachings to others. Study materials will be mailed via US postal service after registration and payment. We hope you enjoy the class!
