Rissho Kosei-kai
NEW ENGLISH KYOTEN
for Sutra Chanting
This project began seven years ago at Rissho Kose-kai headquarters in Tokyo. The new English Kyoten is a direct result of the members’ voices. It is an exciting reflection of the new century for Rissho Kosei-kai Buddhism.
The process began by starting with the Sanskrit text. It was studied word-by-word, line-by-line... with side-by-side comparisons of the Sanskrit, Chinese, Japanese, and all of the existing English translations available at this time.
A team of professionals was created to work on this project. The team was comprised of Buddhist scholars, sutra translations experts, and Sanskrit, Chinese, Japanese, and native English linguists.
Several areas of focus included:
- Language to most closely convey the original meaning
- Non-inclusive language removal
- Consideration of sound, rhythm, and cadence
- Founder Niwano’s interpretation
We learn in Buddhism that everything changes. So this year, let’s begin to chant our new sutra book, giving it a chance to enter our hearts and minds, bringing us deeper into our faith and practice.
